Free King Charles III Coronation Activities
The Coronation is just around the corner – a day that marks the crowning of King Charles III. In the UK there will be a bank holiday on Monday 6th May. The public are encouraged to hold their own celebrations and can watch the procession on television. It's a big event in British history and TheSchoolRun wanted to share some fun activities that will keeps the kids entertained and feeling like part of the festivities.
What is a coronation?
A coronation is a royal tradition that marks the crowning of a monarch (a king or queen) and announces the bestowing of their regal powers (the powers given to a king or queen). In the UK, the monarch is presented with royal objects and the crown is placed on their head. This is a big day in UK history and the first coronation since 1953!
Who is King Charles III?
King Charles III is the King of the United Kingdom. He used to be known as the Prince of Wales, but after Queen Elizabeth II died on the 8th September 2022, he was given the new title of King of the United Kingdom. He is also the new Head of the Commonwealth, which includes 54 countries across the globe. He was born in 1948 and, at the age of 74, is the oldest person to take the throne.
How do people celebrate?
People celebrate royal events in many different ways. Some cafes, pubs and restaurants will host coronation events and people can watch the procession on a large television. There will be lots of decorations in windows and some streets will hold parties for people who live there.
