Southbank sensation
What: Wrap yourself up in the spirit of the season with music, drama, art and dance all taking place alongside the River Thames at London’s famous Southbank Centre. Enjoy colourful illuminated artworks lighting up the building after dark, give curling a go at the Winter Market, craft homemade Christmas crackers (complete with your favourite terrible jokes), or even catch the first-ever stage adaptation of Tom Fletcher’s The Creakers! Plus, why not send 2024 out in style by popping into a family-friendly New Year’s Eve party (at midday), complete with singsongs, dancing and the obligatory Auld Lang Syne.

Historical holidays
What: Celebrate the glorious and occasionally grisly tale of how Christmas came to be with this new live show from Horrible Histories at London’s Alexandra Palace. Join Charles Dickens, Oliver Cromwell and even Saint Nick himself as you go on a journey through festive history featuring Victorian villains, Puritan parties and Tudor treats in this hilarious performance about the most wonderful time of the year.

Creature feature
What: Get set to go wild with plenty of animal antics taking place at London Zoo this winter. Enjoy the sight of a 25-foot-tall Christmas tree and animals enjoying their festive treats, get eco-crafty with recycled materials, learn some fascinating facts about 12 of the zoo’s most iconic residents, or meet Santa’s elves and post your letter to the North Pole before saying hello to the man himself, who will be busy feeding the animals and spreading plenty of Christmas cheer.

Garden party
What: Get illuminated at Kew this Christmas when you follow their beautiful 3km-long light trail as it weaves its way through the gardens, featuring over 20 dazzling installations. As you explore this iridescent botanical wonderland, you’ll be able to pass through glittering tunnels of light, watch flickering flames in the Fire Garden, view all sorts of larger-than-life illuminated sculptures and enjoy some delicious festive treats – but don’t forget to keep an eye out for Santa and his elves along the way.

Monarch mayhem
What: Take a trip to the Tower of London and enjoy a right royal Christmas with brand new exhibitions and activities exploring how Kings and Queens have celebrated throughout the ages. After finding out about elaborate entertainments at the Tudor court, chilly Frost fairs on the Thames and Edward I’s lavish festive feast, you can join in with a giant game of pass-the-parcel, sit on a throne for a regal family portrait, and watch a performance of A Visit from St. Nicholas, a Victorian poem that helped inspire the story of Santa as we know him today.

Walking in the air
What: Filled with colourful sets and extravagant costumes, Sadlers’ Wells will be bringing their magical dance adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ classic picture book The Snowman back to the Peacock Theatre, dazzling audiences of all ages for its 27th year. This enchanting stage show will leave you with a sense of wonder as you follow the timeless tale of a boy and his magical snowman journeying through a wintery wonderland to reach the North Pole, meeting a host of different woodland creatures, snowmen from around the world and even a dancing pineapple along the way, all accompanied by live orchestral music.

World of wonder
What: Enjoy a six-week seasonal celebration as Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland opens its doors again for the winter. Expect Victorian fairground rides, Santa Land and parades, as well as the world’s tallest transportable Big Wheel! You can also watch a dazzling display of thrills and skills at the Cirque Berserk stunt show, join in with the Christmas Singalong hosted by CBeebies superstar Justin Fletcher, and journey down the rabbit hole to explore a life-sized Alice in Wonderland display carved from over 500 tonnes of ice – before you have a go at carving your own ice sculpture too.

Seasonal science
What: Join CBeebies star Maddie Moate in the West End for a new live-on-stage science show filled with festive facts and magical experiments. In this STEM-themed seasonal spectacular, inspired by Maddie’s book A Very Curious Christmas, you’ll be able to find out where snowflakes come from, why crackers go BANG, how Brussels sprouts make you fart, and many more answers to the mysteries behind our Christmas traditions.

Christmas Past
What: Tiptoe into an enchanting fairytale world as Shakespeare’s Globe presents a new version of Hansel and Gretel, made to a perfect recipe including plenty of music, mayhem and festive magic.  When Hansel and Gretel’s parents abandon them in the woods, the children must try and make their way home – but they soon get distracted by a trail of treats too good to resist and a seemingly-sweet talking stranger with a plan of her own…

Going global
What: If you’ve got a head for heights this holiday, take a trip to a winter wonderland with a difference and climb to the very top of the O2 Arena! After scaling the 52m ascent, you can step inside the UK’s highest snow globe and admire the views while enjoying falling snow, tasty Christmas cookies and a whimsical Christmas display.

Let’s dance
What: Enjoy an uplifting tale of passion and persistence as this new re-imagining of Noel Streatfeild’s classic children’s novel Ballet Shoes arrives at the National Theatre. Meet the three Fossil sisters – Pauline, Petrova and Posy – as they fight to pursue their big ambitions, in an attempt to forge a future, keep their family together and maybe learn a dance or two along the way.

Saxon shenanigans
What: Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Saturnalia or Solstice, Butser Ancient Farm will be springing to life with a warm welcome for the whole family this holiday. Discover historic winter traditions as you snuggle up beside the toasty fires, reconnect with nature as you meet the Deer Queen and Holly King and join their magical quest to keep winter at bay, gather in the Iron Age roundhouse for some enchanting seasonal storytelling from times long past, and don’t forget to make a magical winter wish!

Bedtime story
What: Experience the classic story of Sleeping Beauty like never before with this spellbinding new pantomime taking place at the Oxford Playhouse. After pricking her finger on a spindle and travelling 1,000 years forward in time, Aurora must draw on her intelligence, bravery and friendships to return to her rightful place in the Kingdom of Oxland, in a magical extravaganza featuring lovable heroes, boo-able villains and plenty of 1980s nostalgia.

Fit for a king
What: Experience a right royal Christmas at Windsor Castle and enjoy the amazing sight of this grand palace festooned with festive decorations and displays – complete with a magnificent 20-foot-high Christmas tree (which took over 13 hours to decorate!) standing in St George’s Hall. As you follow the festive trail through the Castle, you’ll be able to step into the shoes of a Victorian child and have a go at crafting traditional Christmas decorations, preparing the menu for a royal Christmas dinner, or dressing up in elegant 19th-century attire.

Elf yourself
What: Scout out the secrets of Santa’s elves and try your hand at becoming Father Christmas’ newest helper as you embark upon Mission: Christmas at Chatham Historic Dockyard. Step inside the secret elf station and learn all the tricks of the trade, from wrapping presents and making toys to the all-important deliveries, in order to earn your place among the Elf Apprentices! Once your training is complete, pop along to see Santa, who’ll have a reward waiting for all your hard work.

All aboard!
What: Forget the grotto – this year it’s full steam ahead as Santa stops by at the Dean Forest Railway. You’re sure to be proper chuffed on this special train ride through the scenic Forest of Dean as Mr Claus makes his way through the carriages before stopping at Lydney Junction to join his elves for a hot drink and a mince pie – then it’s time to pick up your gift before heading home.

An arrow escape
What: Take your seats for a tale of roguish revelry and derring-do as legendary outlaw Robin Hood sets out to defeat the miserly Sheriff of Nottingham in this festive adventure at Kingston’s Rose Theatre. As the snow begins to fall, Sherwood is bereft of Christmas cheer, with the cruel Sheriff and his minions squeezing every last coin they can out of their subjects. But Robin and his Merry Men are busy cooking up an audacious scheme to ensure the citizens of Sherwood will have something to celebrate come Christmas Day…

That’s the spirit!
What: Go south to Dover Castle and be prepared for some spooky shenanigans as ghosts from Christmases past take over this iconic historic fortress. Follow the fabulous new festive trail inspired by A Christmas Carol as you hear stories from spirits from the past, present and future before meeting Ebenezer Scrooge inside the atmospheric Great Tower. There’s also a chance for visitors to pop in and say hello to Santa, who’ll be happy to share some of his favourite tales as you sit around the Christmas tree.

The car’s the star
What: Get ready to start your engines as you take a trip to the Brooklands Museum’s New Year’s Day Gathering, one of the largest classic car rallies in the UK. Expect a spectacular display of over 1,000 specially selected cars, trucks and motorbikes from throughout the 20th century – Astons to Austins, Jaguars to Jeeps, Peugeots to Porsches, and much more. As you work your way through this selection of magnificent motors, there’ll be live music, a winter barbeque, and lots more for the whole family to enjoy.

Ballroom blitz
What: Enjoy a sugary-sweet musical retelling of the classic rags-to-riches fairytale when Cinderella: Ice Cream Seller sets up shop at Oxford’s Story Museum. After finding her happily-ever-after, Cinderella has gone on to launch a chain of ice-cream parlours throughout the land – but how did she do it? Join loyal Cinderella employees Talvi and Caldwell as they share this rags-to-riches tale featuring palace balls, glass slippers, live music and plenty of magical ice cream in a tale that’s bound to tantalise your tastebuds

Lights fantastic!
What: Get ready for an illuminated wintery extravaganza as Enlightened makes its return to Hylands Estate for the 5th year in a row! With over a mile of specially curated illuminated attractions scattered throughout the estate, you can enjoy an en-lightening evening wending your way through the trails, passing through a 50m tunnel of light, watching a spectacular laser show, and seeing mysterious and magical creatures brought to life before your eyes with special effects.

In the deep Midwinter
What: Enjoy some subterranean storytelling and explore a mysterious underground world down in the 4,500-year-old Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean. Say hello to Father Christmas and journey with him through a wintery world of decorated caverns, then meet Bernard, a boy who befriends a baby polar bear he finds floating on an iceberg and make your way through a snowy Arctic wonderland. Just don’t forget to take a break at the Underground Café along the way for a special festive treat!

Light work
What: Brighten up your winter nights as you take a trip to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, where glittering tunnels of light, bejewelled trees and all kinds of larger-than-life lanterns bring wonder and beauty to this historic garden. And if you visit during the day, you’ll be able to enjoy a Christmas party complete with music, crackers, festive crafts and toasted marshmallows, before joining Father Christmas for some magical storytelling in the Head Gardener’s office.

Absolutely fin-tastic
What: Get stuck into some extra-special undersea adventures at the National Marine Aquarium. Take the plunge and go snorkelling in the Aquarium’s massive Atlantic Ocean Tank – the deepest in the UK! Climb in and immerse yourself amongst the stingrays, sharks and green turtles. You can also find out more about this fascinating reptile with a special workshop working alongside the Aquarium’s team, where you’ll learn what it takes to feed over 5,000 very different sea creatures, before giving Friday The Turtle a special snack.

Magical music
What: Go west this winter to the Eden Project, which will be filled full of music to mark the Christmas season. Join Father Christmas and his elves as they share the secrets of Christmas magic, then collect your present and go for a whirl on the vintage carousel before having a go on the ice-rink and warming up with a hot chocolate. Then, as darkness falls, you can follow a route around the Rainforest Biome, where the tropical landscape has been transformed into an enchanted wonderland with breath taking new light displays and festive surprises around every corner.

Time after time
What: Turn back the clock and set off on a time-travelling trip around Longleat, thanks to this year’s Festival of Light, which celebrates Longleat’s 75th anniversary. Explore the evolution of the earth, from the dinosaurs to the present day, as you follow the spectacular lantern trail, featuring kings and queens alongside magnificent beasts both real and imaginary, listen as a 15-metre-tall Christmas tree sings your favourite carols, hop aboard the Santa Train or watch a passage through time projected onto the walls of Longleat House.

Bay watch
What: Enjoy some Christmas lights with a difference beside the seaside in Cornwall. First started in 1963 by Mousehole-based artist, Joan Gillchrest, the small seaside town uses more than 7,000 bulbs and 50 miles of cable to decorate the harbour and surrounding houses with hundreds of colourful displays. You'll be able to spot a blue whale, sea serpent and sailing boats as they gently drift around the old town harbour, as well as starey gazey pie – made famous in Antonia Barber's classic children's book ‘The Mousehole Cat’.

Catch a cliff-hanger
What: Catch a special family-friendly theatrical performance in the beautiful open-air setting of the Minack Theatre – carved out of granite cliffs with the blue sea of Porthcurno Bay far below. Enjoy the timeless tale of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and journey with mysterious ghosts through the darkened streets of Victorian London or shake off the Boxing Day blues with The Sea Show, a quirky and hilarious mix of puppet show, natural history and comedy cabaret, where you can meet crazy characters including Ruan the reformed.

Blooming marvellous
What: Head to deepest Devon and go art hunting at RHS Rosemoor, where the annual Winter Sculpture Exhibition will be on display, featuring over 200 different creations of all shapes and sizes, set against the backdrop of the beautiful winter gardens. As night falls, the enchanting Rosemoor Glow trail will switch on, featuring a flickering ‘field of fire’, a rainbow tunnel of lights, a sparkling waterfall, and enchanting music and narration telling the magical tale of Jack Frost.

Tree-mendous
What: Experience the magical spectacle of over 100 enormous glittering trees, amongst other festive illuminations, as part of Bournemouth’s annual Christmas extravaganza. Walking from the seafront, through the town centre and beyond, you can enjoy magical illuminations including a giant bauble, majestic seven-metre golden reindeer, a 3D walkthrough 60ft tall Wonderland tree with 30,000 individually programmed lights, a frosty fountain and an icicle-filled walk watched over by a family of polar bears.

USA A-Okay
What: Enjoy a hand-crafted Christmas experience as you pay a visit to Bath’s American Museum and Gardens. The Georgian Manor House will be decorated for the season with hundreds of beautiful, artisan decorations, topped off with a stunning 18-foot fir tree, taking pride of place in Central Hall. Find the hidden cats and dogs throughout the building as you complete your special book trail, listen in to traditional seasonal storytelling and enjoy some festive face painting.

Creature feature
What: Zooluminate returns to brighten up Dartmoor Zoo for 2024, with a whole host of brand new and exciting illuminations. Enjoy a magical wintery walk around the Zoo, taking in all sorts of amazing light installations as you go: and if you’re lucky, you might see some of the zoo animals all snuggled up in their enclosures.

Prince charming
What: Settle down and enjoy some magical storytelling with this dance-theatre adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince from DanceEast. In this classic tale of love and friendship, the Little Prince leaves behind his tiny asteroid to travel into the weird and wonderful universe. Along the way he’ll meet a mysterious snake, a friendly fox, a lonely pilot and a star-counting businessman, and together they’ll discover the incredible power of friendship in an enchanting mix of dance, comedy and spoken-word.

Animal magic
What: Go animal crackers at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo this December and help Santa’s elves create a tasty gift for some of the zoo’s animal residents, before popping over to their enclosure to deliver it. Keep your eyes peeled for a hidden Christmas pudding as you go – if you spot it, you’ll win a festive prize! Afterwards, pop into Santa’s cosy grotto in the Lookout Lodge, where you can enjoy some Christmas crafts before meeting the big man himself. You can also learn more about Whipsnade’s reindeer herd with Mrs Claus, enjoy festive-themed animal talks and even have a go at creating the best Christmas cracker joke!

Play away
What: Be transported this Christmas with some globe-trotting festive fun at Ickworth! Roam the magnificent Ickworth House and discover winter scenes and traditions from throughout Europe, from the snow-capped Swiss Alps to the colourful Venetian Carnival, follow the activity trail on a walk through the woods, or enjoy making paper boats and hot-air-balloon lanterns in the West Wing Gallery. Plus, you’ll also be able to find out if Santa is able to sort out his broken-down sleigh in a cheerful musical stage show.

Hoo goes there?
What: Celebrate Yuletide at Sutton Hoo and discover what this time of year meant for the Anglo-Saxons. Find out how some of the objects uncovered at the site are related to Yule traditions, explore the Yule feasting table, and share your own festive traditions on the Yule tree, before setting off on a scavenger hunt to help a young Anglo-Saxon gather the materials for a Yule feast. You’ll also be able to pop into Tranmer House and discover what Christmas was like for the archaeologists excavating Sutton Hoo in the 1980s.

Victorian values
What: Blists Hill Victorian Town is all set to get into the historical holiday spirit, with streets speckled with snow and decorated to mark the festive season, as costumed Victorian residents (and maybe even some elves) busy themselves preparing for the big day. You’ll be able to learn all about 19th century Christmases, watch a classic Punch and Judy show, pick up a tasty treat from one of the shops, say hello to the reindeer herd, and visit the magical Wishing Tree. What: You’re in for a whale of a time with this new nautical stage show at Nottingham’s Lakeside Arts Centre. The next winter, Noi is determined to set off and see his friend once again, no matter how long he may have to wait. Expect a heartwarming tale of loneliness, love and courage, in this magical tale based on the picture book by Benji Davies.

What: Get ready for some giant laughs with Jack and the Beanstalk, this year’s festive pantomime spectacular at the Sunderland Empire. When some sneaky scoundrels steal a cow and a princess from the town of Boggy Bottom, it’s up to Jack to set off on a fairy-tale adventure to get them back, encountering a kind-hearted king, a feisty fairy, a cow with some serious beef and of course a ginormous magical plant on this reimagined romp through a classic fairy story.

What: Journey into a magical kingdom at the Alnwick Garden as Lilidorei, one of the world’s largest adventure playgrounds, comes alive with magic, light and sound. Explore the homes of nine different fairy clans and meet the Secret Keepers, who’ll be offering up enchanting winter storytelling and activities inspired by festive traditions from around the world, before meeting Father Christmas in his cosy grotto – you might even come face to face with his real-life reindeer and feed them a tasty treat.

Art of glass
What: Get creative with these artistic workshops at the National Glass Centre. Take inspiration from your holiday wishes and create a colourful design on a clear glass shape using glass grains and tiles, which will be melded together to become a beautiful artwork! You can also decorate a glass jar with transparent materials and make a reindeer beacon to leave out on Christmas Eve or use special paint pens to transform a glass pane into your favourite animal.

What: Calling all determined detectives! Santa’s magical master key has been stolen, and it’s up to you to discover the secrets of forensic science to find it in this hands-on workshop taking place at Techniquest. Explore the world of crimefighting as you search for fingerprints, investigate clothing fibres, and analyse ink with chromatography in order to track down the mischievous culprit. Plus, you can find out some super-cool facts about the coldest places on Earth in the new live science show, where you’ll learn why polar bears can’t wear high heels and why penguins love bubbles and join in with a special snowy Christmas party.

Zip zip hooray!
What: Speed along to Zip World and for some high-wire seasonal surprises. Take the cable railway underground and discover a network of illuminated tunnels, leading you through a maze of lights to a magical workshop and then through to Santa in his cosy grotto. After collecting your gift, you can get stuck into Christmas crafts and decorate a slate bauble, write your official letter to Santa, and enjoy a complimentary hot chocolate and mince pie.

What: Expect laughter, songs and plenty of cake with The Gingerbread Boy, a new festive family show at Glowyr Theatre. Deep in the Fairy-Tale Forest lives a boy made entirely of gingerbread, whose life is changed forever when he meets Blake, a young lad from a nearby village, and sets off on an adventurous journey of discovery – to meet a special visitor on Christmas Eve! There’ll also be the chance for you to meet Santa after the show and collect a Christmas gift.

Garden glow
What: Enjoy a mesmerising mile-long walk through Margam Country Park, transformed for the winter with amazing illuminations courtesy of Luminate. Redesigned this year with new routes, installations and interactive elements alongside returning favourites, the whole family is sure to enjoy following the meandering trail, taking in ambient music, light games and tasty treats along the way.

Fabulous fortress
What: Be prepared to be dazzled as the annual ‘Castle of Light’ illuminations return, transforming the historic walls of Scotland’s most famous castle into a kingdom of colours. Look out for fantastic beasts as a tapestry of all-new colour projections lead you on a guided tour of the grounds and discover immersive displays showcasing a selection of Scotland’s historical myths, magic and mysteries. Seaside special
What: Get ready to make a splash this season with some fishy fun at SEA LIFE Loch Lomond. As you make your way through the aquarium, meeting all sorts of cool creatures from sharks to sea anemones to otters, you’ll be able to find the answers to a festive quiz, before meeting with Santa in his undersea grotto to share your Christmas wishes and receive a gift.

Bake off bonanza
What: Something’s cooking at the Aberdeen Science Centre this winter, so come along and find out all about the chemistry that takes place in your kitchen! Find out how normal baking ingredients can cause all kinds of chemical reactions in a special science show, before joining in with drop-in experiments and storytelling. You’ll also be able to help Father Christmas and his cheeky elves to bake the perfect cookies, before embarking on a scavenger hunt around the science centre and collecting a present from the man in red.

What: Set sail for a swashbuckling tale of pirates, treachery and treasure as the Royal Lyceum Theatre’s new Christmas show, Treasure Island, weighs anchor this winter. Inspired by tales of cutlasses, ships and gold, join Jim Hawkins as he sets out in search of Captain Flint’s hidden fortune with the help of the mysterious Lean Jean Silver. Expect sea shanties and plenty of puffins but keep an eye out for the Jolly Roger!

Hooray for Holyrood!
What: Enjoy some decadent decorations at the Palace of Holyroodhouse as they mark the season with two 12-foot-high Christmas trees in the Throne Room, an elaborate sugared fruit display in the Dining Room, and velvet garlands, berries and seasonal foliage adorning the Great Stair. You can also discover how the tradition of sending Christmas cards began, before making your own or creating a ribbon wreath inspired by the Palace decorations.

Festive farmyard
What: Get set for a weekend of farm-themed fun as you pay a visit to Scotland’s National Museum of Rural Life. See the farmhouse spruced up for the festive season and say hello to the animals as they settle in for winter, before getting stuck in with Christmassy crafts and making a cute paper pig, turkey or Christmas tree bauble, scented pomander or reindeer dust. Then, you can add your own wish to the Moo Year tree and take a seat for some cosy winter storytelling.

Titanic tales
What: There’s fun for everyone at the Titanic Experience in Belfast, where you can join Santa and his elves as they count down to their favourite night of the year. Take a trip through the enchanted forest and make a wish at the magical wishing tree before stepping through the Old Curiosity Shop to enter the Elves’ Workshop. You’ll be able to visit Mrs Claus in her cosy kitchen, listen to festive tales and take part in traditional games and crafts before getting your name checked off the ‘naughty or nice’ list by the chief elf to meet Santa himself.

What: This Christmas at W5, try your hand at becoming one of Santa’s little helpers as you enrol in Elf Academy! Compete in fun games and activities to earn your very own elf hat in this new live show featuring animation, adventure, robots and plenty of Christmas magic. Then, you’ll be able to decorate some tasty gingerbread biscuits and enjoy storytelling with Mrs Claus before seeing Santa and picking up your present.
