How many of the world's 207 countries can you name? Learn the locations and flags of every nation with National Geographic's free colouring map, adapted by cartographers so you can colour it in (it's huge – 8 panels! –  so it can be an ongoing project). 

Best for interactive geographical games

Test your knowledge of countries, capitals, flags, US states, continents, islands, oceans, landmarks and more with interactive World Geography Games (you can play in other languages too, if you fancy an even bigger challenge!). Games are free to play so you'll be a geography whizz by the end of the month!

The geography KS1 and KS2 Class Clips on BBC Teach offer concise explanations of a variety of geographical topics for primary children.

Best for learning about local maps

Colouring that will keep even KS2 kids (and adults!) busy for hours, these downloadable Ordnance Survey maps for UK cities and locations (London, Southampton, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Newcastle and more) are availbale for free to colour in. It's time to sharpen your colour pencils, dig out the felt tips and give it a go – though at 1: 10 000 scale, you'll need a steady hand to stay in the lines!

Best for extra-terrestrial exploration

 

Wander through the deserted landscape on Mars thanks to a free immersive experience from NASA and Google, Access Mars, accessible on all desktop and mobile devices and virtual reality / augmented reality (VR/AR) headsets. 

The guided tour of Mars has been created using imagery from NASA's Curiosity rover, allowing users to wander the actual dunes and valleys explored by the spacecraft and look more closely at objects of scientific interest, including rock outcrops and mud crack. Four important sites for NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission can also be visited: Curiosity's landing site; Murray Buttes; Marias Pass and Pahrump Hills.

Explorer Classroom’s live video events connect students with National Geographic Explorers across all seven continents to bring exploration to life, every week day at 2pm Eastern Standard Time (7pm in Britain).
