Using long division with large numbers

Dividing large numbers with the long division method
To divide four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers, it is best to use long division. You need to be clear on short division (the ‘bus stop method’) before you do this! Can you use long division to work out these questions?
Keystage:  KS2, Year 6, 11 Plus

What is long division?

Long division is a method of dividing one number by another in a systematic way. It's a step-by-step process that breaks down the division into smaller, more manageable steps. This method is typically introduced in primary school, in Year 5 and Year 6, and is an important foundational skill in mathematics.

What will you find in our long division worksheet?

Our long division worksheet is perfect for Year 6 children mastering the art of long division (without any pesky remainders!).

In mathematics, some sums will have an answer that requires a remainder – the amount left over when one number is divided by another and they don't divide evenly. But in this worksheet, we have avoided any questions like this in order to ease your child into long division and help them grasp the method first.

The sums in this worksheet focus on dividing 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. We provide an example first to help your child understand the process and apply their knowledge effectively.

You have the option of downloading the worksheet or using it interactively online, to suit your child's preferred practice. You can also progress to our Long division with remainders worksheet, to progress your child's skills.
