Important update from TheSchoolRun

For the past 13 years, TheSchoolRun has been run by a small team of mums working from home, dedicated to providing quality educational resources to primary school parents. Unfortunately, rising supplier costs and falling revenue have made it impossible for us to continue operating, and we’ve had to make the difficult decision to close. The good news: We’ve arranged for another educational provider to take over many of our resources. These will be hosted on a new portal, where the content will be updated and expanded to support your child’s learning.

What this means for subscribers:

  • Your subscription is still active, and for now, you can keep using the website as normal — just log in with your usual details to access all our articles and resources*.
  • In a few months, all resources will move to the new portal. You’ll continue to have access there until your subscription ends. We’ll send you full details nearer the time.
  • As a thank you for your support, we’ll also be sending you 16 primary school eBooks (worth £108.84) to download and keep.

A few changes to be aware of:

  • The Learning Journey weekly email has ended, but your child’s plan will still be updated on your dashboard each Monday. Just log in to see the recommended worksheets.
  • The 11+ weekly emails have now ended. We sent you all the remaining emails in the series at the end of March — please check your inbox (and spam folder) if you haven’t seen them. You can also follow the full programme here: 11+ Learning Journey.

If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]. Thank you for being part of our journey it’s been a privilege to support your family’s learning.

*If you need to reset your password, it will still work as usual. Please check your spam folder if the reset email doesn’t appear in your inbox.

Simplifying fractions

Simplifying fractions
A KS2 numeracy worksheet created by an experienced educator to help your child simplify fractions. Simplify these fractions by dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same number. You need to make sure that your final fraction has numbers that are as small as possible. Check all your answers to see if you could simplify each one further by dividing it again.
Keystage:  KS2, Year 6

How do you simplify fractions?

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to simplify fractions:

Step 1: Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD):

  • The first step in simplifying a fraction is to find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). The GCD is the largest number that divides evenly into both the numerator and the denominator.

Step 2: Divide both numbers by the GCD:

  • Once you've found the GCD, divide both the numerator and the denominator of the fraction by this common divisor. This step simplifies the fraction to its lowest terms.

Step 3: Check for further simplification (Optional):

  • After dividing by the GCD, check if the resulting fraction can be simplified further. If both the numerator and the denominator have common factors, repeat the process of finding the GCD and dividing until you can no longer simplify the fraction.

What is an example of how to simplify a fraction?

Here is an example of how to simplify a fraction:

Let's say we have the fraction 8/12.

The GCD of 8 and 12 is 4.

Divide both the numerator and denominator by 4.

8 divided by 4 = 2

12 divided by 4 = 3

The simplified fraction is 2/3

How will this simplifying fractions worksheet help your child?

This teacher-created fractions worksheet will help your child consolidate their knowledge and boost confidence in their ability to simplify fractions. They will be shown a clear and easy-to-understand example of how to simplify a fraction, then they will be asked 10 questions to help them practise what they've learned.
