Using non-standard measures: length
Let's get measuring. Look at your hand. Stretch it out as big as it can go. The distance from your thumb to your little finger is called your hand span. Go around your house finding things that are smaller and things that are larger than your hand span. Write them in these circles.
Use string to measure
This practical and fun activity will enable your child to measure the snakes with string and compare the lengths using mathematical language.

Let's have some fun with measuring height. Find the items listed and use them to measure the things around you (for example, draw something that is heavier than a can of beans). Why do you think we call this non-standard measuring?
Counting around the house
Look at the items in the table. Can you find them in your home? How many can you find? Count them and fill in the table!

Add one (and draw)

As your child gets to grips with number lines in Reception and Y1, help them try some basic calculations. This worksheet offers some subtraction problems to solve using a number line.
Addition using a number line
Number lines are used a lot in primary school maths. Show your Reception child how to practise using one to work out simple addition.

Help your child visualise and understand subtraction (or taking away). This worksheet uses pictures to make the concept clearer.
